How to build a beachside oyster picnic

Easy tips for hosting oyster gatherings with friends by the sea
Whether you’re road-tripping the NSW coast or planning a casual afternoon by the water, here’s how to build your dream beachside oyster picnic.
There’s something uniquely Australian about throwing down a picnic rug, soaking up the sea breeze, and sharing good food with mates. And while fish and chips might be the usual go-to, we reckon it’s time to upgrade your beachside feed. Enter: oysters and chips.
Australian oysters – fresh, briny, and bursting with flavour – are the perfect picnic companion. They're sustainable, nutritious, and downright delicious. Whether you’re road-tripping the NSW coast or planning a casual afternoon by the water, here’s how to build your dream beachside oyster picnic.
Why Oysters + Chips is the New Fish + Chips
Fish and chips is a classic, but oysters and chips is on the rise. Here’s why:
Healthier – Oysters are high in zinc, vitamin B12 and omega-3s.
More sustainable – Oysters are one of the most sustainable seafoods on the planet.
More fun – They’re hands-on, interactive, and great for conversation.
More local – Grown right here in Aussie waters, you can taste the place.
Ready to Picnic?
There’s no wrong way to enjoy Australian seafood by the beach – but oysters just might be the most joyful. Whether you’re exploring NSW picnic locations on a beach holiday or looking to impress on your next weekend outing, oysters and chips might be your new go-to.
Let’s make oysters the main event of our seaside holidays. More oysters. More often. More family fun.
Step 1: Pack Like a Pro
Keep it simple. You’ll need:
Fresh oysters – either live for a DIY shuck or pre-shucked half shells
An esky with ice bricks – to keep everything cool
A shucking knife & tea towel – if going full bush shucker
Lemons, mignonette or hot sauce – flavour kickers
Chips – potato, sweet potato, veggie or even thick hot chips from the local shop
Drinks – crisp whites, sparkling water or a cheeky local brew
Picnic gear – rug, cutlery, napkins, and a rubbish bag (leave no trace)

Step 2: Choose the Perfect Spot
Australia's coastline is peppered with spectacular seaside picnic locations. Here are some of our favourites across NSW, from hidden coves to wild beaches:
South Coast NSW
Mimosa Rocks National Park, Tathra – Coastal bushland meets sea cliffs. Grab oysters from nearby producers and hike to a quiet beach for your spread. Options include Aragunnu, Middle Lagoon, Picnic Point (past the Wapengo oyster leases) and Nelson Lagoon.
Bendalong – Known for its friendly giant stingrays and glassy water, this family favourite is oyster-picnic friendly with a range of swimming and surfing options to suit the whole family.
Killalea Beach (The Farm), Shellharbour – A surfer’s paradise with sweeping ocean views that was voted NSW’s best beach and 2nd-best in Australia. Enjoy a journey that blends nature, history, and recreation with delicious south coast oysters.
North Coast NSW
Bateau Bay Beach Picnic Area – An easy spot with shaded tables, gentle surf and a great outlook.
Seal Rocks – Off the beaten track but worth the drive. Raw and remote, bring your own oysters from nearby producers at Wallis Lake and take in the scenery.
Sydney Favourites
Turimetta Beach, Northern Beaches – A locals’ secret. Rug up on the grass with a view over the sandstone cliffs.
Chinaman’s Beach, Mosman – Calm waters, family-friendly, and ideal for a laid-back oyster lunch.
Milk Beach, Vaucluse – Harbour views, gentle tides, and space to unwind.
Wattamolla Beach, Royal National Park – Lagoon meets ocean. Great for a full-day NSW road trip picnic with oysters in hand.
